PLAYER SELECTION
At Shrewsbury Badminton Club, we aim to foster a friendly, inclusive, and respectful community of players who enjoy both the social and competitive sides of badminton. This policy outlines how we welcome new members and ensure the club remains a safe, positive, and engaging environment for everyone.
Eligibility Criteria
To join our club, prospective members should:
-
Be 18 years of age or older
-
Have a basic understanding of badminton rules and etiquette
-
Be happy to follow our Club Code of Conduct and general policies
-
Join us for at least two trial sessions so we can get to know each other
Selection Process
1. Application
If you’re interested in joining, we invite you to complete a membership application—available online or on paper.
2. Trial Sessions
We welcome you to attend two trial sessions. This gives us all a chance to meet, play together, and assess how well the fit feels—both in terms of gameplay and club culture.
3. What We’re Looking For
During your trial, we’ll be looking for the following qualities:
-
Understanding of the game: Basic rules, scoring, service rotation, and court boundaries
-
Rally ability: Consistent rallies with some control over shot placement
-
Shot variety: A basic ability to perform clears, drops, lifts, and net shots—even if still developing
-
Safe and respectful play: Awareness of others and avoiding risky or unsafe movement
-
Team awareness: Especially in doubles, understanding court positioning and partner coordination
-
Openness to learning: A positive attitude and willingness to improve with guidance
-
General fitness: Ability to participate in match play across several games
-
Club spirit: An interest in being part of the club community, including helping with occasional events or activities
Decision Process
After your trial sessions, a small selection panel (typically made up of two or three committee members or experienced players) will review the feedback. Decisions are based on suitability, the current mix of players, and overall club capacity.
Notification
We’ll get in touch within 7 days of your final trial—usually by email or phone—to let you know the outcome.
-
If accepted: You’ll be guided through registration and asked to pay club dues
-
If not accepted: We may offer feedback and warmly invite you to reapply after six months
Appeals & Reconsideration
If you’d like to appeal the decision, you’re welcome to submit a written request to the Club Secretary within 14 days. The club committee will consider your appeal and respond within 21 days.
Code of Conduct
All members are asked to read and agree to the Club’s Code of Conduct when joining. This helps keep our club environment positive and safe for everyone. Serious breaches may lead to suspension or termination of membership.
Policy Review
We regularly review this policy—at least once a year—to ensure it reflects the needs of the club and its members.
Let us know if you have any questions—we’re always happy to help. We look forward to welcoming new players and growing our club together!
